When go to start your vehicle, the battery provides power to the starter motor, but when the engine start running, the battery takes a back seat, and the alternator takes over. The alternator is an electric generator that is powered by the engine's drive belt, and provides all of the vehicle's electrical power, once the engine starts. If the alternator fails, the responsibility of running all of the vehicle's electronics is now put on the battery, and it simply can't handle the load and ends up draining quickly.
If the alternator does fail, you will want to make sure to replace it as soon as possible so your car can operate effectively.
