About the Honda Civic Sedan

2016 Honda Civic Sedan

The Honda Civic is one of the most recognized and awarded cars in the world. With over 16 million sold it's also one of the most popular Honda's ever produced. No other vehicle has been synonymous with reliability, fuel economy, and value like the Civic. It's the King of Compacts, and it's going to keep that crown for many years to come

The Civic Sedan is one of Honda's most popular vehicles, as its blend of value, reliability, and driving performance have dominated the compact car segment for almost 30 years, and have made the Civic an automotive icon1

Below you learn about some of the Honda Civic Sedan's top career highlights and milestones.

1ST GENERATION (1987–1991)

CLASS: Subcompact
ENGINE: 1.5 or 1.6L I4
LENGTH: 166.5 in
WEIGHT: 2335 lbs
MPG (M/T): 27city / 31hwy
MSRP: $6635-$13,140
The first generation Civic Sedan was introduced several years after the Civic nameplate was born, however, the sedan made up for lost time by offering fuel injection, an independent rear suspension, and even came in a wagon trim, which was AWD. It was unheard of to see a compact car have these features which made the 1st generation Civic Sedan truly revolutionary.

2ND GENERATION (1992-1995)

CLASS: Subcompact
ENGINE: 1.5L or 1.6L I4
LENGTH: 173.0 in
WEIGHT: 2400lbs (avg)
MPG (M/T): 35city / 41hwy
MSRP: $12,070-$16,280
The 2nd generation Civic Sedan was not much different than the 1st generation in terms of available engine sizes, and overall size, but gained new features like a rear sway gar and ABS. The most obvious change though was styling, as the 2nd generation Civic became much more aerodynamic than any previous generation before it.

3RD GENERATION (1996-2000)

CLASS: Subcompact
ENGINE: 1.5L or 1.6L I4
LENGTH: 175.1in
WEIGHT: 2,519 lbs
MPG (M/T): 27city / 33hwy
MSRP: $12,885 - $16,830
The 3rd generation Civic Sedan was a introduced in 1997 for the 1998 model year, and didn't stray too far from the design of the last generation. The biggest addition to the Civic Sedan lineup for this generation was the Natural Gas Civic or GX trim. It uses compressed Natural gas instead of gasoline to get 31mpg hwy. This was lower than the gasoline version, however the savings in fuel cost greatly outweighed the reduction in fuel economy.

4TH GENERATION (2001-2005)

CLASS: Compact
ENGINE: 1.7L I4
LENGTH: 174.6 in
WEIGHT: 2,421 lbs
MPG (M/T): 27city / 33hwy
MSRP: $13,260 - $19,900
The 4th generation Civic Sedan made its debut in 2001. This new Civic was slightly smaller in exterior dimensions than the previous generation, however, cabin space grew to give this Civic more interior space than ever before. This generation was also the first already produced model to come in a Hybrid trim. A refresh in 2004 saw a new front fascia and headlights which gave the Civic Sedan a more aggressive look.

5TH GENERATION (2006-2011)

6TH GENERATION (2012-2015)

CLASS: Compact
ENGINE: 1.8L I4
LENGTH: 178.1 in
WEIGHT: 2609lbs
MPG: 30city / 39hwy
MSRP: $18,490 - $23,090
Because of the financial crisis in 2008, Honda thought the market would shift, and customers would prefer fuel economy and price only when buying a new vehicle. This thought process resulted in the 2012 Civic, which was received extremely poorly by the media for its underwhelming build quality and driving performance. This gave Honda's rivals the space they needed to move in, and in 2014, Honda was forced to try and update the Civic in an effort to reclaim struggling sales.

7TH GENERATION (2016+)

CLASS: Compact
ENGINE: 1.5L I4 Turbo & 2.0L I4
LENGTH: 182.3 in
WEIGHT: 2609lbs
MPG: 31city / 41hwy
MSRP: $18,640 - $26,500
Because of the poor sales and reception by the previous Civic generation, Honda set out to reestablish the Civic as the premier compact car, and reclaim the tile of the King of Compacts. With the 2016 Civic Sedan, Honda has done just that. Featuring the first ever turbocharged Civic trim, completely redesigned exterior, redesigned interior which says goodbye to the split dash design and a plethora of standard features, the new generation Civic is the best Civic yet!
